Splendid Sussex & D-Day Museum

Resort - Bognor Regis

Overview

Bognor Regis has been a seaside fishing settlement since Anglo Saxon times. It became a fashionable resort in the reign of George III and has been frequented by royalty on numerous occasions. The resort is flat and has an excellent promenade walk. There is a pier and a delightful park, Hotham Park, which boasts a narrow gauge railway, putting green, crazy golf, tennis court and boating lake. On the beach between Bognor Regis and Aldwick lies the wreck of a floating pontoon - part of the Mulberry Harbour which was destined to be towed across to Normandy on D-Day June 6, 1944 and was washed up on the beach shortly after D-Day. The beach is predominantly pebbly but the water is clean and the quality of the light often remarkable. Inland the scenery is quintessentially English with the splendour of the South Downs, England's newest National Park, very close at hand.

The historic Lanes have attracted visitors for centuries, and this labyrinth of alleyways, squares and streets is a delight to explore with its wide range of independent shops, sparkling jewellers and charming antique stores. Later in the day, we’ll continue to seaside Worthing – a lovely coastal resort with a long pier and award-winning beaches.

Day 5 - Portsmouth & D-Day Story

  • Discover the waterfront city of Portsmouth, home to the British Royal Navy for over 500 years and boasting a wealth of maritime history. Enjoy some free time to explore at leisure before visiting the interesting D-Day Story – solely focussed on the liberation of Europe the tale is told using personal possessions and the words of the people who took part. Stunning imagery, audio-visual presentations and authentic displays tell the story of ordinary people who worked together to achieve the extraordinary.

Day 6 - Arundel Half Day

  • Visit Arundel – an historic market town that is overlooked by the impressive castle which towers over the beautiful listed buildings, ancient streets and surrounding countryside. Take a stroll around the shops, embark on a riverside walk or learn more about the fascinating history of the town in one of the museums – Arundel will have something for you!

The location of Bognor Regis makes it unique; not only has it been officially named the sunniest town in Britain, it is very close to the South Downs National Park, with its beautiful Sussex countryside castles and country houses all just a short distance away. The hotel features a large restaurant, relaxing bar lounge and an entertainment room with a dancefloor. The hotel also has an outdoor terrace, where you can soak up the sun, enjoy a drink and watch the world go by. There is a large car park and the lift serves all floors.
