Portmeirion & Snowdon Mountain Railway

Resort - Criccieth

Overview

Criccieth lies on the South side of the Llyn Peninsula with splendid views over Cardigan Bay. It is home to a medieval castle, built by the Welsh in the mid-thirteenth century but later taken by Edward I who incorporated it into his ring of castles designed to maintain Norman control. It was captured by Owain Glyndwr in the uprising of 1404 and the scorch marks from that battle can still be seen! The castle headland divides the town into two with a pebbly beach to the West and a lovely sheltered mainly sandy beach to the East. Nearby is the village of Llanystumdwy, which boasts a museum devoted to David Lloyd George, the “Welsh Wizard”, whose family once lived in Criccieth. The countryside around Criccieth is breathtaking with fabulous coastal views over Cardigan Bay, awesome mountain scenery in Snowdonia and delightful gardens and castles at every turn.

Day 2 - Porthmadog & Portmeirion

  • Visit the charming coastal town of Porthmadog - a harbour town with a long maritime history and a hub for railway enthusiasts as the scenic Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways pass through the town. There is a good range of shops and cafes to keep you entertained!
  • Visit magical Portmeirion. This unique village, set on its own peninsula on the southern shores of Snowdonia has a dreamlike, Italianate quality and there are lovely gardens and spectacular views at every turn.

Day 4 - Llanberis & Snowdon Mountain Railway

  • Venture into the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park as we visit Llanberis. This lakeside village at the foot of Mount Snowdon has plenty to see and do. From here, we join the Snowdon Mountain Railway for a journey to the summit of Wales' highest peak. This historic railway has been transporting visitors to the summit of Snowdon since 1896 and on clear days the view can stretch as far as Ireland. Awe-inspiring scenery lies all around and the new visitor centre, Hafod Eryri at the summit is home to the Summit Cafe and gift shop or you could make your way to the very tip of the mountain reached by rocky steps at the back of the visitor centre.
