Eastbourne & Bluebell Railway

Resort - Eastbourne

Overview

Eastbourne is one of Britain's more elegant resorts, enjoying a glorious location on the South Coast. Because it is sheltered by Beachy Head and the South Downs it has an excellent sunshine record, always coming around the top of the sunshine league. It has a spacious promenade to stroll along and the world-famous Carpet Gardens line the seafront. Eastbourne has clean inviting beaches predominantly of shingle leading to sand at low tide and offering excellent bathing. There's plenty to see and do with first class shops, cinemas, museums, shows, concerts and dancing in the Winter Gardens. There is also a large variety of sporting facilities, whether you want to play or spectate, such as boating, bowls, golf, putting, and walking on the South Downs.

Day 5 - Bluebell Railway & Lewes

  • The Bluebell Railway was one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country resulting in one of the finest collections of vintage steam locomotives and carriages many of which were preserved straight out of service from British Railways.
  • Travelling on the fine steam Bluebell Railway, we pass through the through the gentle Sussex Weald (fare included in tour cost).
  • Its medieval streets, old English churches and tiny twittens (a Sussex word for alleyway) allow visitors a glimpse into the true essence of bygone Lewes.
  • Surrounded by chalk cliffs, the townscape is dominated by the remains of a Norman castle and is home to the townhouse of Anne of Cleves (closed through much of Dec/Jan).
  • Lewes also claims host to numerous contemporary art galleries and historic & special interest sites including the once mighty Priory of St. Pancras (entry fees may apply).

Day 6 - Rye & Hastings

  • A medieval citadel, entered through a powerful stone gateway, Rye is home to a myriad of nooks and crannies all with smuggling stories to tell! St Mary’s church tower offers fine viewpoints over the terracotta roofs of the half-timbered houses and the sheer concentration of living history packed into this charming market town makes it the perfect day out!
  • One of the original Cinque Ports, Hastings has a long and varied history from the days of William the Conqueror. Today, wandering through the Old town is still a pleasure or perhaps you could take a trip on the steepest cliff railway in the UK to enjoy wonderful views of the coast and sea!
